Steel Foundry

Setup

This case involves a large steel foundry with complex systems where gas usage was noticed to be increasing modestly over time.

Problem

A relief valve on a gas line had failed, venting line pressure gas to the atmosphere. The vent line terminated above the roof level, many meters above ground level. The remote location and high elevation of the vent termination, together with the buoyancy of natural gas, resulted in gas dissipation into the atmosphere without detection.

Cost

Venting over a six month period wasted gas costing much more than $30,000.

Prevention

The facility profile provided by Arctic Fox Energy Tracking would have allowed staff to see the discrepancy between gas use and production rate, permitting immediate corrective action.
